the stuff going on at columbia campus rn is genuinely incredible
despite mass arrests by NYPD and several students (including rep ilhan omarās daughter, isra hirsi) being suspended for their participation and having their university identification deactivated, the gaza solidarity encampment is still going strong well into its second day. def recommend following independent reporter talia jane who is taking part and providing live updates. (talia was the first reporter to break aaron bushnellās self immolation in february; she was one of the reporters he contacted personally prior to the protest.)

āI was very, very emotionally avoidant. I strictly emotionally avoided everything my whole twenties. I was catching up with my sister the other day, and I was like, āI think from the way that we were raised, I think we were taught that we have to earn love.ā Instead of it being an unconditional thing or that being an unconditional entity. Iām not saying it is that.
I donāt know whether that comes from that African upbringing, that strict upbringing: get your grades, get into a good uni, become a doctor, become a lawyer. Start overachieving. It was like you have to prove why youāre lovable. Weāre trained to be like, āIf Iām not exceptional, I wonāt be loved.ā Certainly, I think that was my thing.
So, yeah, I think Iām just learning now like, āOh, you are allowed to be loved.ā You donāt have to be excellent or aspire to that term, āBlack excellenceā. What the hell? Thereās so much white mediocrity that gets celebrated, and Black people, we have to be absolutely flawless to get half of [that] anyway. So, Iām slowly training myself out of that and being like, āNo shit. You deserve love just for existing.ā And that has taught me to be a lot more loving as well, in a weird way.ā
